What do I do?

Copyediting

Working either on-screen or on paper, this will involve some or all of the following:

  • checking grammar, spelling and punctuation
  • checking cross-references to chapters, figures, tables, footnotes, references, …
  • applying the required house formatting style as necessary
  • ensuring the appropriate US/UK conventions are used
  • ensuring consistency in spelling, usage and tone
  • ensuring the text is in the appropriate style for the intended audience
  • ensuring the references are in the appropriate format
  • spotting obvious errors in the content
  • clarifying the text where necessary
  • consulting with the author about proposed changes

Proofreading

Working either on-screen or on paper, this will involve some or all of the following:

  • checking that the text has been transferred to page layout correctly
  • suggesting adjustments to the layout to aid clarity or readability
  • checking that editors’ corrections have been applied correctly
  • checking for any obvious errors that might have been missed during editing

Website checking

I can check website content both on- and off-line, as well as checking that all the links function correctly. I can also review dynamically created content.

Re-writing

If a text needs more substantial intervention than just copyediting then I can help there as well. For example, a document written by someone whose first language is not English may need to be polished before publication.
